"Cosmic Dance"

2017 Mostly Medieval Theatre Festival
​Kalamazoo, MI

Performed at the first Mostly Medieval Theatre Festival in 2017, "Cosmic Dance" is a music and dance performance based on the life and music of the twelfth-century mystic and visionary Hildegard of Bingen, combining ancient music with contemporary dance and interpreting Hildegard’s vision for a new age. This piece gave me a wonderful opportunity to combine several of my interests: medieval women's writing, early music, and dance. Although I was not trying to "reconstruct" any kind of historical performance, I did take inspiration from European folk dances and medieval dance traditions such as carols (round dances with figures) for some parts of this piece. You can see some of the figures and round formations in the photographs below.
