During my time at Western Michigan University, I have been the Instructor of Record for three courses: ENGL 1050, Thought and Writing; ENGL 1100, Literary Interpretation; and ENGL 3300, British Literature I. I have also designed several courses, but not yet taught them, including ENGL 2070, Here Be Monsters: Monstrosity in Global Literature and ENGL 2070, Heroes, Gods, and Monsters: Mythology and Modern Retellings.

I consider my role as an instructor of English to be simultaneously a coach of skills such as argumentative strategies and analytical tools and an accessible, friendly partner who can encourage students to share interpretations and arguments about literature in small group and class discussions. One of my main goals is to train my students in concrete skills that can be taken and applied in future classes and work, regardless of field, such as critical thinking, argumentation, critical analysis, and writing skills. In all of my courses, I also strive to help my students develop an appreciation and enjoyment of reading and writing and to develop or increase a love of literature.

Learn more about my approach to teaching below, and my teaching performance and the courses I have taught, including descriptions and objectives, syllabi, assignments, and sample lessons, in the pages in this section.
